Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt roof shingles are one of the most popular roofing materials used on residential homes. They are designed to protect a home through decades of weathering with minimal upkeep and are available in a wide range of colors and styles.

There are three major categories of asphalt roofing shingles; strip shingles, dimensional shingles, and luxury shingles. It is important to understand the difference between each type in order to pick the right product for your home.

Signs that your Asphalt Shingles need to be repaired or replaced

Roof Age

How old is your existing asphalt shingle roof? Most experts agree that a typical roof will last between 20 and 30 years. If the roof was installed over another layer or several layers and it is older than 20 years, chances are you need a new roof.

Ventilation

A key component to any roofing system is proper ventilation.

Curling or Cupping

Curling and cupping happen over time, as shingles are subjecated to UV radiation, rain, heat, and other natural forces. Over time, the expansion and contraction of the shingles can lead to cupping and curling. Excessive cupping and curling which exposes the underlayment beneath the shingles is a sign that your roof needs repair or replacement.

Granules in the Gutters

Look in your gutters to see whether they are loaded up with shingle granules. Roofs tend to lose more granules toward the end of their life cycle. Inconsistent or darker color on some parts of the roof is another sign the granules have worn away. If you see exposed fiberglass and lack of granules that is a good indication you need a new roof.

Rot, Moss, or Algae

Over time water and sun exposure can cause shingles to soften and start to break. Rot, moss, mold and algae are very common problems, especially in shady or cool locations with lots of rain or water exposure.

To check for rot or growth on your shingles, look for the following signs or symptoms:

  • Frayed or split bottom edges
  • Fuzzy or furry textures on the edges or between the cracks of the shingles
  • Streaky or discolored appearances on the shingles or on the walls of the house below them

Missing or Damaged Shingles

Another sign your roof might need replacement is if shingles are missing entirely or if pieces of them are missing or damaged. While asphalt roofs are extremely durable, they still can’t stand up to missing shingles and excessive damage. If you’re seeing leaks or other problems inside your house, check to make sure none of your shingles are missing.
